Accommodations are Not Enough
Wondering why your student's accommodations don't seem to be helping?
There is a persistent confusion about learning disability accommodations circulating among parents and teachers.
I often hear from parents and teachers who are frustrated by the seemingly unsuccessful use of accommodations in the classroom. They may feel they haven’t found the “right” accommodations, or they are confused why the accommodations in place are not helping as expected.
Accommodations are felt to be the best answer to a student’s struggles and are applied to a student’s learning plan without any real understanding of the specific learning disability or the real purpose of the accommodations assigned.
Parents frequently ask me for a list of dyscalculia accommodations, hoping the list will solve, or seriously alleviate, their child’s struggles.
